Numinous condenses a central belief that lies at the core of Cho’s artistic practice. Numinous (adj.) describes an experience that makes you fearful yet fascinated, awed yet attracted — the powerful, feeling of being overwhelmed and inspired. Many of us experience disorientation, suffering from the strain of seeking our own identity and examining the framework that got us to where we are. There are certain aspects of ourselves that we cannot change. Our true-selves.
“The act of wearing a ‘mask’ to influence how others view you is a dangerous practice; the more you pretend to be something you are not, the more distant your true self becomes. This performance attempts to refute the phenomena of hiding who you are and serves as a guide to navigate away from that treacherous path. Numinous is the antidote to recover buried memories, re-instill definition to the ambiguity of having multiple personas, and experience rebirth through reconciling the true self and masked self. Most importantly, this work aims to bring to light the structures of oppression that lead us to build inauthentic versions of ourselves in the first place, and dismantle them. The truth is hardly ever on the surface, more often than not the truth can only found deep inside.” -Su Kaiden Cho
Artist Bio:
Su Kaiden Cho was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. Cho is a Korean contemporary artist and Colorado is where he now resides and works. Cho’s work is a collision of sculptural paintings, performance, and installation arts as fine arts reflecting his life experiences as naturalized South Korean-American. Cho received a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts Practices with emphasis of installation arts from University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Cho has exhibited his work in numerous exhibitions including solo exhibitions and artists in residence, and a featured artist at Gallery of Contemporary Arts, Colorado Springs, and an award winning designer at the Fine Arts Center in Colorado.

Opening Reception: Friday, July 9th, 5:00pm – 9pm with performances at 5:30pm, 6:30pm, 7:30pm, 8:30pm, 9:00pm.
Understudy is free-to-visit and open to all. We are located at the Colorado Convention Center / Theatre District light rail stop near 14th and Stout. Look for the Shantell Martin art bench.
